Substitute Bus Monitor

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS


This position involves responsibility for assisting in providing and maintaining safe conditions for school bus passengers. The School Bus Monitor assists with the safe evacuation of the vehicle in emergency situations. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Transportation. Related duties may be assigned as required.


TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

  • Assists in providing and maintaining safe conditions for school bus passengers
  • Ensures students are seated promptly after boarding and remain seated until the bus reaches its destination
  • Assists student riders with problems while on the bus
  • Exits the bus before students to ensure traffic conditions are safe and assists children in crossing to the curb
  • Assists with seatbelts and safety equipment, including wheelchair lifts, for students with special needs
  • Uses the “bus conduct report” to document and report behavior concerns
  • Reinforces basic behavioral and learning expectations to promote safe and appropriate bus conduct
  • Assists students in boarding and exiting the bus
  • May determine seating assignments to maintain order
  • May perform food service or custodial duties on a substitute basis
